Svartholm Sea Fortress

The Swedish fortification period on Svartholm ended in 1808 when Svartholm capitulated to the Russians almost entirely without resistance. During the Crimean War in 1855, an English naval squadron blew up large parts of Svartholm's walls so that they could no longer be used and they fell into disrepair. Since the 1960s, the fortress has been restored under the direction of the museum agency. Svartholm is a popular excursion destination for the whole family.

You can get to the fortress both with your own boat or with a tour boat. For boaters, there are plenty of free guest berths.

There is also a summer restaurant on the island.

Svartholm sea fortress was built as a base for the Swedish navy and to protect the border with Russia. Colonel Augustin Ehrensvärd designed it as a regular four hundred meter long bastion fort on the island. Construction of Svartholm began in 1748 and its central parts were completed in the 1760s, but it was never completely finished.

The sea fortress Svartholm is not particularly suitable for people with reduced mobility. The paths are in a natural state and some passages have high stairs.
