Wintertime Amethyst Mine Visit

The sustainable Lampivaara Amethyst mine is possibly the only gemstone mine in the world that welcomes visitors. The Amethyst mine is located on the top of the hill. The owner tells the story of the mine and describes the process of mining. After the introduction, you will go to dig up a lucky amethyst for yourself, which has waited 2000 million years to be found. You will be provided with special equipment for the digging and a snow-cat lift to the hill. In midwinter, when a veil of darkness covers Lapland, you may even see the Northern Lights in the middle of the day.

After the pick up from your hotel and a 1.5 hour trip, you will hop on to the snow-cat, a large snow vehicle, to the Lampivaara Amethyst mine. You will get the tools and a guidance to dig out your very own rare, hidden gemstones. Before and after your search for the amethyst, you can have a panoramic view of the surrounding snow-covered Lappish landscapes as the mine is located on the border of the beautiful Pyhä-Luosto national park.

Descending back down with the snowcat, you will warm yourself up around a bonfire, and prepare for a lunch in the Lappish style. Delight in tasting the Finnish fish soup, reindeer meat sandwich and sausages. Head back to the town with your own amethysts in your hands if it fits in your closed first.
