The Helsinki Happiness Hacks, held in June 2024, offered a one-of-a-kind experience where a select group of participants, including Henrique Chirichella, delved into the essence of Finnish happiness with insights from a range of experts, Helsinkians. Attendees were immersed in the country's serene landscapes, rich food culture, innovative design, and charming quirks.

In this article, Henrique shares his favourite moments from the visit, reflecting on Finland’s vibrant culture, progressive values, and commitment to wellbeing and connection, all of which make it a must-visit destination.

Discovering happiness through nature, culture, and connection

Henrique reflects on his journey to Finland, saying, "Imagine a country where the connection with your surroundings is profound – where nature, culture, lifestyle, and people are deeply intertwined. I had heard that Finland is the land of a thousand lakes and the midnight sun, but nothing could have prepared me for the experience of visiting one of the most fascinating countries in the world."

As a 34-year-old gay man from Brazil, Henrique embarked on this visit with excitement and curiosity. "Coming from a country known for its vibrant culture and passionate energy, I was eager to discover how a place so different from Brazil could offer a unique perspective on life and happiness. And as soon as we arrived, it all started to make sense – you could see firsthand why Finland has been named the happiest country in the world for seven consecutive years."

From the moment their plane entered Finnish airspace, Henrique was captivated by the stunning view outside the window. Below them, a vast green carpet stretched for miles, dotted with hundreds of lakes, contrasting beautifully against the deep green of the trees, all reaching to the horizon. In that moment, one feeling overwhelmed Henrique's mind: gratitude.

Embracing authenticity

Henrique and his boyfriend decided to apply for the Helsinki Happiness Hacks experience in its final days. "As an LGBTQ+ couple, the thought of being selected to visit one of the most progressive nations in the world in terms of diversity and LGBTQIA+ rights was incredibly exciting," Henrique shares. "And of course, our happiness hack was all about revealing our true selves. We were fortunate enough to be selected."

From the moment they arrived at Helsinki Airport, Henrique was struck by the presence of gender-neutral washrooms. "It was the first indication that Finnish society genuinely cared about the well-being of everyone." Soon, he began to realize that what truly defines Finland is a deep sense of community and connection.

Henrique notes that Finland was the first country in the world to grant political rights to women, a milestone that speaks to the broader commitment to equality. This sense of fairness extends to the LGBTQIA+ community, as well. "It was incredibly moving to see so many rainbow flags flying in support of Pride Month. The freedom to be a homosexual couple without fearing judgment for public displays of affection truly demonstrates the social progress Finland has made."

Progress is a word that describes Finland as a whole. The country’s dedication to sustainability and its deep concern for the environment reflects the respect its people have for nature. "As a Brazilian living in a tropical country, I must admit, I was inspired by the genuine and meaningful way the Finns feel connected to their surroundings," Henrique shares. "One of the most memorable moments for me was walking barefoot on the rocky surface of an island. Something so trivial and simple, but somehow, it brought tears to my eyes."

Henrique observes that Finns have an appreciation for simple activities that promote well-being. "Whether it's participating in a ceramics workshop, skateboarding, or spending a few minutes in the sauna, Finns know how to savour the small pleasures of life." He notes that these activities serve as gateways to one's inner self, offering moments of revitalization. "The lesson I took away from this was to value these simple moments and, if there's a desire to try something new, just go for it."

Discovering balance and connection

The balance between work and quality of life stands out as a priority in Finland. "This approach not only increases productivity but also contributes to a happier, more satisfied, and healthier population. It clearly impacts how people interact with each other. Despite hearing that Finns can be reserved, I felt welcomed from the start. I also noticed how much they value authenticity in their interactions. Trust is key, and even silence – something that never feels awkward – adds to the depth of connection, fostering genuine, lasting bonds." Henrique emphasizes that this respect for personal space and individuality makes interactions feel more sincere and meaningful.

Respect extends to food and meals as well. "Finns value fresh, local ingredients, often opting for seasonal and organic produce. Meals are moments to slow down, where sustainable practices are embraced, and waste is minimized. Sharing a meal is not just about the food – it's a time to connect with those around you."

Embracing Finland’s balance of life and happiness

Reflecting on his time in Finland, Henrique concludes, "Even though it's been a while since I returned home, I feel as though I brought a piece of Finland with me. It was an enlightening journey that deepened my appreciation for nature, culture, and community. I discovered a place where happiness is woven into the fabric of daily life through a commitment to equality, sustainability, and the joy of simple pleasures."

From stunning landscapes to forward-thinking social values, Finland embodies a harmonious balance between work and life, where genuine human connections prevail. "This trip was not just a travel adventure; it was a transformative journey that taught me to cherish the small moments, embrace authenticity, and respect both people and nature. Finland’s example of a well-rounded and joyful society will stay with me, inspiring a renewed perspective on what it means to live a fulfilling life. It truly was the experience of a lifetime," Henrique concludes.
