Nature and Lifestyle 2/2

Finnish nature mastery with Mikaela Creutz

Second lesson

Lesson 2 takes you deeper into concrete ways to find a connection with nature. In Finland, nature surrounds us all and is a strong part of the Finnish identity from infancy to old age. We Finns are accustomed to immersing ourselves in nature throughout the year, regardless of the weather.

What you’ll learn

With Mikaela, you will learn about the simplest form of a nature excursion and a moment in nature, as well as how the Finnish connection to nature and happiness is formed. Mikaela's relationship with nature focuses on the recreational use of nature in contemporary society – exploring how the Finnish connection to nature is manifested today and how we interact with our surroundings. You will delve into the meaning of a nature connection rooted in appreciation for the natural world, a mindset that can be embraced anywhere, regardless of location. The lesson will teach you the fundamentals of nature hiking and how being in nature clears the mind, provides space for new thoughts, promotes relaxation, and fosters creativity. Even a brief moment in nature inspires and recharges. Gain insights into camping essentials and the principles of Everyman's rights, which grant you the freedom to explore and connect with nature in profound ways.

“The session with Mikaela changed my preconceived notion that “the forest is only a place to hike” and I started feeling a deeper connection to nature. The biggest lesson I learned was that it is important to feel the slow passage of time.”

Your coach Mikaela Creutz

Mikaela Creutz is a nature lover, hiker and photographer who resides in Northeastern Finland. She works and freelances in communications, digital marketing and photography, with a strong focus on nature. Living as close to wild nature as possible has always been a big part of Mikaela's dreams, and she feels most at home when surrounded by nature.

For approximately 15 years, Mikaela worked in the finance sector in Helsinki. Exactly ten years ago, she fell in love with hiking and trekking during her first wilderness expedition, and there was no turning back. Later on, she moved to the North, as Helsinki began to feel too far away from everything, especially the great Northern outdoors. Mikaela has since explored new landscapes every month, and her adventures have taken her all over Finland, especially to the peace and quiet of Lapland and the North.

Mikaela has also helped others discover Finnish nature and hiking through volunteer work. In 2018, she fulfilled her dream of living closer to nature and moved to Kuusamo to study photography.

Mikaela actively travels and hikes, takes photographs and explores nature all over Finland, albeit with a particular interest in Lapland. She loves to pack her tent and go on hikes in the wilderness year-round, in both winter and summer. Through her photos and stories, Mikaela aims to inspire others to experience the beauty of Finland's nature and hiking opportunities.

The fun part: your task

  1. Pause and find a nice and peaceful spot - you can either stand or sit.

  2. Close your eyes for a moment, feel the ground beneath your feet/yourself - take a few calm breaths, relax your body and mind.

  3. Direct your attention to your ears - what sounds do you hear, birdsong, the rustle of leaves in the wind, or something else?

  4. Open your eyes - observe the surrounding nature and pay attention to what you see, as well as the scents, colors, and sensations.

  5. Look more closely around you - notice different shades of color and contrasts. Pay attention to the play of light through the trees or the various shades of green in the vegetation.

  6. Feel the forest near you - touch the trunk of a tree, feel the ground beneath your feet, or experience the gentle touch of the wind on your skin.

  7. Immerse yourself in the moment - and observe nature with all your senses. Be present and open to the new.

  8. Spend a few minutes in your place - enjoy the surrounding nature and be aware of how it affects you.

  9. When you are ready, close your eyes again and take a moment to enjoy the tranquility and connection with nature.
