Wolf cave

Frei

The Wolf cave of Karijoki is an exciting archeological site on top of Susivuori hill, with diverse hiking services. Has the cave been a residence of a Neanderthal man?

The Wolf Cave of Karijoki in Kristiinankaupunki is a cave almost 30 meters deep, 25 meters wide and more than two meters high, but only a part of it has been studied and is visible. The cave is closed by a fence for security reasons. The cave can be illuminated by a switch in the fence.

Traces of a human living in the cave before the last ice age have been found in the wolf cave, such as several stone tools and the bottom of a campfire site. Has the cave at the top of a rocky mountain been the residence of a Neanderthal man, or do the rocks and coal deposits found in the cave tell you something else? There is no sure answer yet.

The path to the observation tower starts from Wolf cave on the left. The trail is partly demanding and goes on a rocky terrain. There is also a Lapp hut in the area.
