Tuntsa Wilderness Area

Frei

From Tuntsa Wilderness Area, in Pohjois-Salla, opens up a view to Europe's largest wilderness, which continues to the other side of the Russian border. Tuntsa is a popular camping, fishing and hunting area. A UKK hiking trail crosses the area.

The UKK hiking trail is also the best way to get acquainted with the nature and landscape of the broader Tuntsa area; for example the portions of the historical area where forest fires have ravaged it. The Tuntsa wilderness is also suitable for hikers, who don't need ready-made routes but are looking for easy-to-navigate terrain and the peace of nature.

In Tuntsa, hiker can visit a special natural formation of Pirunkirkko rising from the terrain or take a break at the shelter near by the Nuoluskuru gorge. Harsh but beautiful nature offers its best in the Tuntsa wilderness area.

On the way to Tuntsa, you can also stop by at the Kullaoja waterfall, located on the Värriönpirtintie at Naruska. There is no fireplace in the area and it is not recommendable to make a fire there. At the crossroads of Naruskantie, there is an excellent fireplace, Naruskan Tammi, for enjoying picnic lunch.
